Lawrie Shabibi presents Incidentals, a solo exhibition by Dubai based artist UBIK. In this show UBIK manipulates his official identity documents—casting them into an elaborate plot that investigates and explores his personal history and migrant identity.
UBIK (b.1985) is an Indian artist living and working in Dubai. His practice concerns with the manipulation and appropriation of text, images and environments, through a variety of forms including print, installation, sculpture, sound and performance. His works explore the possibility of constructing a narrative whose aesthetics sample from everyday objects while addressing the spectacle nature of the artwork itself. UBIK's use of humor and irony is an important and deliberate aspect of his practice that allows him to examine the societal matters that consume our contemporary lives. Solo exhibitions include Dissident, Galería Sabrina Amrani, Madrid; Relate to the Matter As I Drop the Bomb, Traffic, Dubai; Here's Something to Violate While You're At It, Shelter, Dubai; iamwhatiam, the jamjar, Dubai. UBIK has also participated in the Biennale Jogja XII Equator#2 2013, Jogja, Indonesia (2013) and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi, India (2012) as well as Art Dubai Projects (2012/2013) and group exhibitions in Salamanca, Spain; Sharjah, UAE, and Jerusalem.
