Saba Khan creates a body of work comprising embroidery and sequined wall hangings in reaction to the general dystopia in Pakistan. One of the vital issues the local population faces on a daily bases is the energy crisis and fickle electricity where the twelve hour power outages have given way to a thriving market for generators and UPS (uninterrupted power supply) units.
The grunting hum of the generators has become part of the landscape where the size of the generator/ UPS is reflected by economic class. In a country where the elite are often numb to natural and economic catastrophes, lack of power hits everyone across the board.
Khan works with professional embroiders to illustrate lavish generators and batteries. Ironically, the market in Pakistan is hugely dominated by these tiny tailoring and embroidery shops housing embroiderers who would often wait idly for the power supply to resume their work as they cannot afford the better ones.
