Uz Zafar’s large scale works are unique engravings on the back surface of the type
of vinyl sheet used for floor covering. Uz Zafar scratches the surface with various
blades to render the exact materiality of the objects he portrays. The works are
monumental in scale yet minute in detail. This work is a large scale rendering of
a cuddly teddy bear wrapped in a gauze. The teddy bear is a borrowed object,
completely alien to traditional Pakistani society, yet amongst an elitist group and a
secondary subset of the rising middle class, it is a coveted part of a child’s menagerie
of toys. The bear and other stuffed toys have replaced traditional hand crafted
playthings.
