In Unfolded Su Yu-Xin explores the relationship between visual language and sensory perception, constructing a delicate alternation of horizons, within which varying distances elicit different modes of observation. The layered surface and multiple perspectives generate a dynamic composition of a repeated waterfall motif, horizontally collaged into a new space or landscape - an in-between place, which allows her to switch between figuration and abstraction. The water motif has been painted in singular, wide brush marks across the boundaries, allowing the composition to flow together. The paint used for the earth or rock motif is derived from natural earth pigment mixed with clam clamshell powder (a common pigment used in Chinese painting for white).
