Lawrie Shabibi is pleased to announce its return to the ninth edition of Abu Dhabi Art in the Solo Projects sector of the fair, presenting a new body of work titled Ironic Experiments by Shaikha Al Mazrou .
Ironic Experiments comprises sculptural works composed of black stoneware alongside a set of drawings that continue to seek the artist’s earlier investigation and exploration of awkward balance. Through the works Al Mazrou aims to explore the irony in the experiment – the interplay between making, material and ideas. The artist is drawn to work that speaks of its making, where the making is also its subject.
The key focus to the artist’s field of inquiry originates in the concept of uncertainty and expectations. It investigates and develops the beauty and aesthetic of materiality and form as part of an ongoing investigation into contemporary aesthetic processes. More specifically, through the examination of material, materiality and ideas, the works negotiate a position between formalism and opposing conceptual approaches and furthers her continuing experiments and questions into the most elementary sculptural qualities.
The Ironic Experiments series oscillate between contrasts – positive and negative space, geometric and organic, form and volume, surface and void, material and tension.
